It was an overcast morning as Stu & Sharon were driving to Cascade Locks to meet up with Don & Betty Shannon. Don & Betty had already arrived by 8:30 AM to save parking spots for club members. Stu & Sharon left early also to make sure of parking & arrived at 9:30AM. Stu & Sharon had to purchase the parking tickets at the gift shop. Rich & Bonnie agreed to bring the remainder of the 36 members & guests from The Troutdale Mall meet-up area.

As usual, Sharon had outdone herself with providing homemade goodies that everyone enjoyed before we boarded the Sternwheeler.

It was a beautiful warm day on the Columbia River & Sternwheeler. Nice to see the Deford Family. The lunches were waiting when we boarded.

Cruise In and Drive-In Tour By Richard Alfieri

The weather forecast was for showers on June 18th, but Bonnie and I were hoping that the forecast was going to be wrong.  We left extra early knowing that we may not be the first person to show up at McDonald’s in Oregon City.  As it was, we only encountered a bit of sprinkles on the way.  We were the first to arrive from our group and so we ordered our breakfast using the gift cards the club was providing for us.  As we finished, the rest of the group made their way in. Greetings were made, gift cards were passed out and breakfasts were consumed.  I believe meeting for breakfast prior to a tour was a first for our club.  Joe Taylor and grandson showed up as a surprise with their Corvette.

After a short driver’s meeting, we left for the driving portion of the tour.  Since the route was really straightforward, no written instructions were needed.  A pleasant drive using Highway 99 allowed views of the Oregon City Falls and the Willamette River. We passed through a few bergs and then the town of Canby.  From there it was just a few more minutes until we reached Aurora where we parked in the area that was cordoned off for the cruise in.  There were already a few vehicles there, including the vintage Aurora fire truck, which caught the eye of our fire truck owners, the Koetjes.  After all were parked and chairs unloaded, the group settled into relaxing and talking.  Some took the opportunity to visit the many antique stores, all housed in the historic buildings around the town area.  I noticed that some members even took home a few “treasures”.

It’s always a challenge to get the group on the road again.  Maybe it would have been easier if I would’ve had the bullhorn.  However, we managed to get going to drive back to Canby, where we reconvened at the Dairy Queen.  All were provided with gift cards for lunch so everyone could buy whatever sounded good to them.  I had called the restaurant some time before and they said the dining area was going to be open.  Upon arrival it was not, but as I had previously told the club there was a grassy area behind the restaurant which had three picnic tables and some nice shade trees.  Some members broke out their chairs again, too.  There was a bit of confusion as the food orders were taken without names, but things were worked out and the food was brought out to our hungry crew.  There was more time for visiting and laughter, but the sky was darkening.  We said our goodbyes and left.  The weather cooperated all day, until a cloud burst on the way home!
